15 August 2022 - UNDERWATER RESTAURANT IN THE MALDIVES

 UNDERWATER RESTAURANT

 IN THE MALDIVES

G'day folks,

Welcome to an underwater restaurant, surrounded by a coral reef.

To enter the restaurant, visitors climb down a spiral staircase in a thatched pavilion at the end of a jetty. They enter the building, which has a curved roof like a tunnel, from above.

Secured five meters below sea level at the Hilton Maldives Resort and Spa, the Ithaa Undersea Restaurant is a mostly acrylic building that only seats 14. Offering a 270-degree panoramic view to its customers, Ithaa was designed and constructed by M.J. Murphy Ltd., a design consultancy based in New Zealand.

Opened in 2005, Ithaa (which means ‘mother of pearl’ in Dhivehi, the local language) charges a premium for its meals, but they might cost less than one would expect for an underwater dinner. They start in price at about $120 US for lunch for hotel guests. The restaurant serves contemporary fusion Maldivian cuisine with Western and Asian influences. Advance reservations are necessary.

Designed by the Kuala Lumpur National Science Center, the building qualifies as the world’s largest aquarium tunnel. After completion in 2004, Ithaa was taken to the Maldives on the back of an ocean-going barge. It took 16 days to arrive. It is estimated that the restaurant, which is placed in extreme conditions, will only last for 20 years.

4 August 2022 - THE MUSEUM OF MUSHROOMS - CROATIA

THE MUSEUM OF

MUSHROOMS

 - CROATIA -

G'day folks,

This is the only museum in the world dedicated solely to mushrooms.

Situated on the second floor of an office building overlooking Bana Jelacica square, the Museum of Mushrooms displays over 1,500 freeze-dried, preserved mushrooms in three large rooms.

Most of the collection was obtained by professor Romano Bozac, a mycologist who studied and wrote on mushrooms for over 50 years. Organized by similar types of mushrooms, each well-preserved example is labeled with a tag that indicates edibility.

The informative and friendly caretaker is always happy to talk mushrooms and point out unique specimens.

15 August 2021 - CLARENCE BIRDSEYE - THE FATHER OF FROZEN FOOD

CLARENCE BIRDSEYE

- THE FATHER OF FROZEN FOOD -

G'day folks,

Birds Eye frozen food went on sale for the first time in 1930 – restricted to 18 stores in Springfield, Massachusetts. The owners, the Goldman Sachs Trading Company, wanted to see how the public would take to this novel idea of offering food for sale.

A year earlier, Goldman had paid $22 million to Clarence Birdseye, the inventor of the process, to secure his trademarks and patents.

This was wealth beyond dreams for 43-year-old New York-born Clarence who had begun his career working as a taxidermist. After jobs in Arizona and New Mexico as an assistant naturalist he moved in 1912 to Labrador – now in Canada – to work as a fur trapper and to carry out a fish and wildlife survey.

It was the fish element of his work that was to change his destiny and lead to the creation of a worldwide business.

Indigenous Canadians at Labrador showed Clarence how they caught fish then preserved them under very thick layers of ice. He was intrigued to see that the fish iced rapidly in the -40C temperature.

He was even more intrigued to discover that the fish tasted fresh when later thawed. Hooked, he could see business opportunities ahead.

He read all he could find about the art of freezing fish, then set up his own company called Birdseye Seafoods Incorporated. He used air chilled to -43C to freeze fish fillets, but consumers gave the product the cold shoulder and in 1924 the company had to file for bankruptcy.

As inventive as he was determined, Birdseye immediately created a new quick-freezing process that involved freezing cartons of fish under pressure between two refrigerated surfaces. The process proved to be commercially viable and he formed a new company, General Seafood Corporation, to develop it.

Ever busy and inventive, Birdseye then came up with another new invention which he called the double belt freezer and this marked the beginning of the flourishing frozen foods industry.

In 1927, he started flash-freezing other food, taking in vegetables, chicken, meat, and fruit.

After the Goldman-Sachs Trading Corporation and the Postum Company (later the General Foods Corporation) bought out Birdseye in 1929 his name was kept as a trademark but split into two words: “Birds Eye”.

The first quick-frozen vegetables, fruit, seafoods, and meat were sold for the first time in 1930 in Springfield under the trade name Birds Eye Frosted Foods.

Refrigerated grocery display cases made their appearance later that year. Another major leap forward came in 1944 with the introduction of refrigerated boxcars to transport the frozen foods by rail nationwide.

National distribution had become a reality and Birdseye had become a legend. Today, frozen food is a multi-billion dollar industry and Birds Eye, the leading brand, is sold almost everywhere.

Clarence Birdseye died of a heart attack in October, 1956. He was 69.

Clancy's comment: I have some of his frozen peas in my freezer.

JAPANESE MOTHER

SERVES FUN FOOD

G'day folks,

It seems like this Japanese mother of three is capable of making any dish look as cute and pretty as it is appetizing.

Etoni was not officially trained in any kind of food art, in fact, she started getting creative with food as a way to convince her daughters to eat. She ended up becoming a master of kyaraben, an elaborate style of bento that features foods that looks like popular characters and things from the world around us.

Clancy's comment: What a great mother. Loooooooove Japanese food! Just sayin' ....

BEAUTIFUL WORKS

OF ART ON A PLATE

G'day folks,

You know how your mom always said never to play with your food, and so you never did it. However …

This artist has made a livelihood from playing with their food and turning that food into absolutely gorgeous portraits and works of art. This artist was originally meant to be a meal prepper, getting plates ready for presentation.

Along the way, she discovered that her prepped plates were actual works of art. Food art has become an absolutely incredible part of the art world, with even fruits becoming the perfect canvas for an artist's imagination. Here are 15 beautiful plates put together by this amazing artist.

Clancy's comment: So clever. These designs would encourage kids to eat healthy food.

29 March 2021 - THE ORIGINS OF CORN

THE ORIGINS OF CORN

G'day folks,

Here's another piece of historical information.

The Americas domesticated the corn plant 10,000 years ago. Farmers in northern Guatemala and southern Mexico bred teosinte, a wild grass, for several generations. This eventually helped develop kernels that were soft enough for human consumption. After the corn plant was created, the invention was soon adopted throughout the Western Hemisphere.

Historians have found that the first grown by Native Americans had small ears and consisted of only six to nine kernels per cob. Later on, they went on to develop many more varieties and corn became a dietary staple for the people of Mesoamerica.

In fact, at one archeological site in Mexico, researchers have found fossilized popped corn kernels over 5,000 years old.

Clancy's comment: A very versatile grain.
