than others see in a trip around the world."

FAMOUS WRITERS

WHO SUICIDED

*

G'day guys,

Today might disturb some people, but life can be harsh sometimes. Here is a list of some writers who have supposedly suicided.

*

Petronius

Age 39. According to Tacitus: Yet he did not fling away life with precipitate haste, but having made an incision in his veins and then, according to his humour, bound them up, he again opened them, while he conversed with his friends, not in a serious strain or on topics that might win for him the glory of courage. And he listened to them as they repeated, not thoughts on the immortality of the soul or on the theories of philosophers, but light poetry and playful verses.

*

Heinrich von Kleist

Age 34. In a murder-suicide, Kleist shot intellectual Henriette Vogel, with whom he was infatuated.

*

Stefan Zweig

Age 60. Suicide pact with his wife, in Brazil. He wrote: I think it better to conclude in good time and in erect bearing a life in which intellectual labour meant the purest joy and personal freedom the highest good on Earth.

*

Virginia Woolf

Age 59. Put some stones in her pockets and walked into the River Ouse. From her suicide note to her husband, Leonard: If anybody could have saved me it would have been you. Everything has gone from me but the certainty of your goodness. I can't go on spoiling your life any longer. I don't think two people could have been happier than we have been. V.

*

Vladimir Mayakovsky

Age 36. Shot himself. From his note: I'm through with life... and [we] should absolve from mutual hurts, afflictions and spleen.

*

Harry Crosby

Age 31. Suicide pact with his young lover.

*

Ernest Hemingway

Age 61. Shot himself with his favorite shotgun.

*

Arthur Koestler

Age 77. Double suicide with wife; barbiturates taken with alcohol.

*

Romain Gary

Age 66. Shot himself a year after his wife, the actress Jean Seberg, committed suicide.

*

John Berryman

Age 57. Jumped off the Washington Avenue Bridge in Minneapolis.

*

Primo Levi

Age 67. Alleged to have thrown himself down his stairs, though there is some doubt. Eli Wiesel remarked: Primo Levi died at Auschwitz forty years earlier.

*

Anne Sexton

Age 45. Wearing a fur coat belonging to her mother, Sexton drank a glass of vodka and started her car in the garage.

*

Jerzy Kosinski

Age 57. Accused of plagiarism and suffering from various ailments, Kosinski asphyxiated himself with a plastic bag. His note read: I am going to put myself to sleep now for a bit longer than usual. Call it Eternity.

*

John Kennedy Toole

Age 31. Attached a garden hose to his tailpipe, ran it into the window of his car, and died, unknown, of carbon monoxide poisoning. His mother would obsess for the next decade trying to get his manuscript published. He was posthumously awarded the Pulitzer Prize for A Confederacy of Dunces in 1981.

*

Hunter S. Thompson

Age 67. Shot himself. Per his instructions, his ashes were later shot from a cannon mounted on a tower in the shape of a fist holding a peyote button.

*

David Foster Wallace

Age 46. Suffering from severe depression, Wallace hanged himself.

*

Sarah Kane

Age 28. After overdosing on prescription drugs, Kane hanged herself two days later in a bathroom at London's King's College Hospital.
