MYSTERY CRATERS

DISCOVERED IN AUSTRALIA

G'day folks,

These 25-million-year-old cavities have perplexed people for decades.

Halfway between Bundaberg and Gin Gin is one of Australia’s greatest mysteries. There, you’ll find a plot of pockmarked land that has baffled people for decades.

In 1971, this patch land was owned by a crop farmer. The farmer wanted to extend the area of his crops, but kept hitting rocks in his attempt to clear the land. He noticed the rocks weren’t like others in the area and sent off to be studied.

It was discovered that the curious rocks were 25 million years old. Intrigued by the strange rocks, a research team investigated the area and uncovered 35 oddly shaped craters hidden in the ground.

The mottled mixture of sandstone and ochre stain have been the subject of many investigations, and people have yet to reach a conclusion as to how they formed. Popular theories range from meteorites to ancient volcanic activity to, of course, extra terrestrial lifeforms.

Clancy's comment: The attraction is located about 330 feet (100 meters) off the highway. Beyond the craters, the attraction features a fossil collection and a fairy garden.
I'm ...
